Public Speaking Tips: Sharpen Your Public Speaking Skills

It was the last day of my college life. In the farewell seminar, all on a sudden, I was requested to say something about my college life. I got extremely nervous. My legs started trembling and my voice lowered down. When I had started my speech, I could utter nothing but the meaningless baa.. baa.. sound.

That was my first public speaking. On that shameful day, it appeared to me that I had no quality for public speaking. But, today I am one of the most successful public speakers around me. Can you assume how this massive change happened? That’s what I am going to say. If we follow some common public speaking tips, it becomes one of the easiest things of the world. Today, I am going to share those very common but important public speaking tips.

Memorization of Addressing:

Public speaking is a formal and structured speech, and in any formal speech addressing covers a vital part. Addressing is more or less same for all types of speech. If you get by heart a single pattern of addressing, you will be able to use it for all public speaking in your life. For example, you can say like the following-

Honorable President, Respectable Secretary and Dear Audience very good morning. I am very much honored to be here and to speak before you.

Or, simply…

Honorable presence, good morning. I am very much glad to have the opportunity to speak before you.

A good starting will grow confidence in you and ultimately you will boost in public speaking.

Brainstorming

Brainstorming is effective for boosting a lot of skills. But effective use of brainstorming is the most important. Before going to the dais think again and again about the topics or issues that could be covered in the speech. Write it down in a small piece of paper and take it with you to the dais. Try to say two or three sentences about the topics written in your paper. Do not try to brainstorm while you are at dais. The people who are efficient enough can brainstorm even while they deliver their speech. But it is not effective specially for those who are new. Mostly it happens that, the new public speakers try to brainstorm at the dais, found their brain blank and get nervous.

Involve the audience

The speech in public speaking should be delivered in such a way that it creates the sense of involvement in the audience. Through some sentences at the starting of the speech, the audience should get the opportunity to believe that the speech is going to help them either by information or at least by the chance of passing a good time. A successful public speaker can feel the emotion of the audience and can hit it successfully.

Practice

The most important and the most common public speaking tips is to practice. There is no alternative of practicing. Even the most successful public speakers have to practice a lot. Winston Churchill practiced before mirror before going before the public. You can also use this method and can practice your speech before a mirror. This will reduce anxiety and ensure smooth delivery.

Before finishing

Attention is needed before finishing the speech. Prior to the end of the speech, thank the audience for their patience hearing. Then make your concluding remarks. Say something practical that the audience can apply in their life. This will create a good impression. And, you know, last impression is the final impression.

In our day to day life, we speak a lot on a lot of issues. But when it is public speaking, we become silent. It’s just because of our ignorance of what public speaking is and how it is to be delivered. Decision is on your hand whether you follow public speaking tips and become successful in public speaking or remain the unsuccessful and shameful public speaker.
